Prof John Lennox

A year ago this week, my second and most recent book The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God was published, and my thesis was unleashed upon the world, as expressed in the subtitle: “How New Atheism grew old and secular thinkers are considering Christianity again”.

It seemed quite a daring claim, to many readers and critics alike… “What Rebirth of belief in God?” was often the response. “Haven’t you seen the stats about the decline of church-going and Christianity in the West”? It’s true, I was sticking my neck out in releasing this book and suggesting that the tide of faith might be about to come back in again. Have I read the culture accurately? Am I just a blind optimist?

As it turns out, a lot has happened over this year which gives me confidence and has proven fascinating! We are seeing increasing public discourse about the importance of recognising and learning about our Christian foundations, as well as the term “lapsed atheist” becoming strangely frequent, plus there seems to be a genuine revival of interest in Christianity and church attendance, even among the young!

And then there were big shocker moments, such as when famous “New Atheist” Ayaan Hirsi Ali announced that she had converted to Christianity, and even confirmed to Richard Dawkins’s face-to-face that this was not mere cultural utility, but a genuine belief and change of worldview. I’m not going to claim that a full-blown revival is underway, but if I may be so bold… these past 365 days have shown me that I might just be on to something!

Justin Brierley has had a ringside seat for the past decade watching the great debates on religion and reports on them with learning, subtlety and grace.

It represents apologetics at its best, a fearless engagement with the most daunting issues of our time.

I’ve received many encouraging messages and reviews from readers about The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God:

“I loved this book. I ordered five more copies for my intellectual friends, hoping they would read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest the contents. I am sure they will. Brierley is engaging, honest, non-threatened presence that loves to hear people talk about their faith—even when it is their faith in their lack of faith.”

David

“This book reaches the heart and equips the mind. In a world where dismal data points to declining church attendance and deconstructing faith, Justin reminds us with tangible and specific stories that God won’t be stopped, and He is reaching the unexpected. Love the podcast too!”
